Someone asked me the other day, “Mike, have you ever heard of the seven deadly sins?” Of course I replied that I had and then they asked me if I could name them off the top of my head. I tried, but I could only think of 5 from memory. I had made a note to myself to look them and it turned into a little mini-bible-study and refresher course for me so I thought I’d share what I found.
Generally speaking, the Seven Deadly Sins are lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy, and pride. I searched and searched for the place in scripture that called this out, grouped together like this, and I was surprised and reminded that the Seven Deadly Sins (as packaged and preached) in Christian tradition are not actually laid out like this in the bible. These seven “deadly” or cardinal sins were decided upon and crafted together in this grouping by the Early Church. They were coined as Chief Sins and actually taught initially to be unforgiveable. We know this not to be true…from a biblical perspective.
There are “seven things that God hates” in Proverbs 6:16-19 that are commonly confused with the Seven but these don’t quite align. Those seven things are, “A proud look, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that are swift in running to evil, a false witness who speaks lies, and one who sows discord among brethren.” While obviously, there is much over lap in principle they are still two sides of a coin. As a matter of practice, and having a little bible trivia fun, see if you can memorize and recite the Seven Deadly Sins without cheating!
If you’d like to read more about these here is a great article at BibleInfo.com that I want to give a hat tip to because I found it to be a great resource in writing this post. Cheers!
