Hi Wesley Hikers!
Some of you have asked if we could do a hike in September, The Mariposa Grove of Sequoia Redwoods in Yosemite National Park is now open again – after 3 years of being closed to the public for restoration. Saturday Sept 15 is the set date to do this hike as a group for anyone who is free that day.
The hike that visits most of the big trees is through the upper grove. It is approximately a 6 mile RT hike to the Galen Clark cabin (closed). A mile beyond this is Wawona Point, overlooking Wawona and the So Fork of the Merced River. Elevation gain to Wawona Point from the shuttle bus is about 1200 ft. The lower grove and the Grizzley, oldest and largest of the Big Trees, is about a 3 mile RT. There is even wheelchair accessibility to the Grizzley tree.
As in the past hikes, meet at Wesley on the westside parking lot near the choir room at 7:15 am, carpool/caravan to Yosemite Lakes Park Hillside Market parking lot (off Hwy 41) and leave no later than 8am from there, continuing to carpool/caravan through the Hwy 41 entrance to Yosemite National Park. There is parking on the left. We need one Park Pass per vehicle to enter the national park. We will then hop on the free shuttle here to the Mariposa Grove.
As on all hikes, bring water, hat, sunscreen, whatever snacks you want, a lunch for eating on the trail, and some money to help with gas for whoever is driving. Also on the way back home, we usually stop in Oakhurst for a bite to eat for whoever is interested, so bring some money for this.
Please let me know if you are joining us, need a ride, can drive, have or need a park pass, or have any questions.
